In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Week, the EMBS team has put together a guide to finding your work-life balance.
For the last 23 years, the Mental Health Foundation has been leading Mental Health Awareness Week. The week brings the UK together to focus on getting good mental health. This year, the week takes place from 12 to 18 May 2025 and the theme is ‘community’.
With our online community in mind, the EMBS team has a few ideas to share to find your own work-life balance.
The EMBS Talent team understands that in today’s world of flexible work, achieving true work-life balance can still feel like a significant challenge. The blurring lines between work and home often lead to employees feeling stretched, juggling professional duties with childcare, ageing parent care, health needs and personal well-being. This constant balancing act can breed frustration and overwhelm, especially when employer support falls short.
We believe companies have a crucial role to play in fostering a healthier environment. Prioritising flexibility is key. Implementing adaptable work arrangements, offering sufficient paid time off and cultivating a culture that respects personal time by discouraging after-hours communication are essential steps. By genuinely supporting employees’ multifaceted lives, organisations can foster a more engaged and productive workforce.
For employees striving for better balance, clear communication with employers is paramount. Discussing options like flexible hours or remote work can help align work with personal commitments. Firmly establishing and upholding personal boundaries is equally important. Learning to say “no” when necessary, both professionally and personally, is vital for preventing burnout. When declining requests, propose alternatives and clearly outline your current workload. Open communication with family about work commitments and setting clear boundaries for work versus family time is also crucial.
To manage workload effectively, break down tasks, utilise project management tools, regularly assess productivity and prioritise essential duties.
Importantly, remember that self-care is not a luxury but a necessity for sustained well-being. By implementing these strategies, both employers and employees can work towards achieving a more sustainable and fulfilling work-life balance.
