We’re delighted to announce that James Wall has joined EMBS as Group Director and Co‑Owner, marking a significant step in our long‑term growth plans across recruitment, training and consultancy.
With more than 20 years’ experience in the recruitment industry, underpinned by a formative career in elite professional football, James brings a rare blend of high‑performance mindset, large‑scale project expertise and deep sector knowledge spanning across engineering, technology and complex infrastructure.
James’ professional journey began not in an office, but in a Premier League dressing room.
After leaving school at 16 in Derby, James signed for Derby County, stepping straight into an elite sports environment. He went on to play professionally in the UK before moving to the United States, representing clubs in Nashville and Atlanta and experiencing first‑hand the discipline, resilience and competitiveness required at the highest level of sport.
Those years in professional football formed the foundation of his approach to business today:
When injury brought his playing career to an end, James transitioned into recruitment, initially joining a family‑owned business in Derby that specialised in rail and engineering, serving major names such as Bombardier, Toyota and Rolls‑Royce. It was here that he first discovered his passion for recruitment and for helping organisations build high‑performing teams.
Over the last two decades, James has held a series of senior and board‑level roles in recruitment, including:
This blend of hands‑on recruitment, major account leadership, programme/project delivery and international expansion is central to what James now brings to EMBS.
James joined EMBS initially on a consultative basis in November to provide support across governance, structure and scalability as we plan the next five years of growth. Having previously worked with James Hall around 15-16 years ago and known Simon locally for many years, there was already a strong foundation of trust and shared values.
James describes walking into EMBS and immediately feeling at home, energised by:
That alignment has led to James joining as Group Director and Co‑Owner, with a shared ambition to scale EMBS in a sustainable, values-driven way.
One of the key reasons James is excited about EMBS is the breadth of capability in the group.
Alongside our engineering and technology recruitment operations, EMBS is underpinned by:
Together, this creates a truly joined‑up model that allows us to:
James’ remit as Group Director is to bring structure, governance and scalability to this ecosystem, ensuring we have the right strategy, processes and behaviours in place to grow while protecting what makes EMBS different.
James frequently references his football background, not as a headline, but as a practical operating philosophy:
This mindset, combined with his experience of working with and learning from leading coaches, psychologists, CEOs and business leaders, is central to the way James will help lead EMBS through its next phase.
Outside of EMBS, James’ life continues to revolve around sport, learning and family:
If you had to sum James up in three words, they would be: family, business, sport.
James joins EMBS at a pivotal moment. With:
…we believe this is the ideal time to scale EMBS carefully, sustainably and with real intent.
James’ appointment as Group Director and Co‑Owner is central to that journey, and we’re excited to share more in the coming weeks about our plans, our “Recruit, Train, Deploy” roadmap, and how we’ll be helping clients build the capability they need for the future.
Welcome to EMBS, James.
