EMBS appoints James Wall as Group Director and Co‑Owner

We’re delighted to announce that James Wall has joined EMBS as Group Director and Co‑Owner, marking a significant step in our long‑term growth plans across recruitment, training and consultancy.

With more than 20 years’ experience in the recruitment industry, underpinned by a formative career in elite professional football, James brings a rare blend of high‑performance mindset, large‑scale project expertise and deep sector knowledge spanning across engineering, technology and complex infrastructure.

From Premier League dressing room to recruitment leadership

James’ professional journey began not in an office, but in a Premier League dressing room.

After leaving school at 16 in Derby, James signed for Derby County, stepping straight into an elite sports environment. He went on to play professionally in the UK before moving to the United States, representing clubs in Nashville and Atlanta and experiencing first‑hand the discipline, resilience and competitiveness required at the highest level of sport.

Those years in professional football formed the foundation of his approach to business today:

  • High standards every day, not just on match day
  • Relentless focus on preparation and process
  • Playing as part of a team where performance really matters

When injury brought his playing career to an end, James transitioned into recruitment, initially joining a family‑owned business in Derby that specialised in rail and engineering, serving major names such as Bombardier, Toyota and Rolls‑Royce. It was here that he first discovered his passion for recruitment and for helping organisations build high‑performing teams.

Building and scaling recruitment businesses

Over the last two decades, James has held a series of senior and board‑level roles in recruitment, including:

  • National Account Manager & Director
    • Led a major MSP / master vendor contract with major Engineering client
    • Managed a £30m+ annual spend
    • Consolidated a supplier base of over 100 agencies
    • Delivered 1,000+ new starters in 18 months across engineering and rail
  • Managing Director
    • Led the business through a period of growth and brand development
    • Gained hands‑on experience of running and scaling an SME
    • Grew business by 224% EBITDA
  • Managing Director & Group Director
    • MD of the founding recruitment business
    • Progressed into a Group role supporting multiple MDs globally
    • Helped grow business into a c. £350m global group across 17 businesses
    • Led and supported delivery across Rail, FMCG, Motorsport/Formula One, Facilities Maintenance, Manufacturing and large‑scale MSP/RPO programmes
    • Played a key role in launching and scaling US operations, including the launch of businesses and teams in New York, USA.

This blend of hands‑on recruitment, major account leadership, programme/project delivery and international expansion is central to what James now brings to EMBS.

Why EMBS – and why now?

James joined EMBS initially on a consultative basis in November to provide support across governance, structure and scalability as we plan the next five years of growth. Having previously worked with James Hall around 15-16 years ago and known Simon locally for many years, there was already a strong foundation of trust and shared values.

James describes walking into EMBS and immediately feeling at home, energised by:

  • The quality of the team
  • The strength of our technology and processes
  • The breadth of our group offering across recruitment, training and consultancy
  • The potential to build something genuinely market‑leading in our core sectors

That alignment has led to James joining as Group Director and Co‑Owner, with a shared ambition to scale EMBS in a sustainable, values-driven way.

A group built to recruit, train and deploy

One of the key reasons James is excited about EMBS is the breadth of capability in the group.

Alongside our engineering and technology recruitment operations, EMBS is underpinned by:

  • Peak Intelligence – training provision supporting skills, capability and performance
  • Stand Out Get Hired – helping individuals present themselves effectively to secure the right roles
  • Consultancy services – supporting engineering and technology transformation programmes

Together, this creates a truly joined‑up model that allows us to:

  • Build and scale high‑performing teams
  • Support clients through complex change and transformation
  • Develop talent pipelines within engineering & technology across Transport, Energy and Defence sectors
  • Deliver not just placements, but measurable outcomes for our clients

James’ remit as Group Director is to bring structure, governance and scalability to this ecosystem, ensuring we have the right strategy, processes and behaviours in place to grow while protecting what makes EMBS different.

Philosophy: elite sport, applied to business

James frequently references his football background, not as a headline, but as a practical operating philosophy:

  • Process over outcome:
In football, if you train well Monday-Friday, the result on Saturday tends to take care of itself. In business, if you focus on daily standards, behaviours and fundamentals, revenue and profit follow.
  • Continuous marginal gains:
Doing the basics brilliantly and improving slightly every day, rather than chasing quick wins.
  • Team before individual:
Success comes from aligned goals, clear roles and a shared plan, whether on the pitch or in a growth‑stage business.
  • Resilience under scrutiny:
From the age of eight, James was judged at every training session and every season. That experience of being analysed, challenged and held to account translates into a calm, focused approach to high‑pressure environments and high‑stakes programmes.

This mindset, combined with his experience of working with and learning from leading coaches, psychologists, CEOs and business leaders, is central to the way James will help lead EMBS through its next phase.

Life outside work

Outside of EMBS, James’ life continues to revolve around sport, learning and family:

  • A proud father of two, he’s passionate about supporting his children’s own journeys in their chosen paths.
  • He has volunteered for over 12 years as a grassroots football coach for Duffield Dynamos, and also coaches cricket for Duffield Cricket Club.
  • He is an active member of the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) community and part of PFA mentor groups, supporting current and former players as they plan their second careers beyond football.
  • Academically, James has completed Global Business & Football Management studies through the PFA Business School and is in the final stages of his Master’s. He has even been invited to consider a PhD, a reflection of his commitment to lifelong learning.

If you had to sum James up in three words, they would be: family, business, sport.

Looking ahead

James joins EMBS at a pivotal moment. With:

  • Strong core recruitment practices in Engineering and Technology
  • Powerful train and deploy proposition through Peak Intelligence and Stand Out Get Hired
  • Growing consultancy capability supporting transformation across Transport, Energy and Defence
  • International recruitment capabilities
  • An ambitious, values‑driven team

…we believe this is the ideal time to scale EMBS carefully, sustainably and with real intent.

James’ appointment as Group Director and Co‑Owner is central to that journey, and we’re excited to share more in the coming weeks about our plans, our “Recruit, Train, Deploy” roadmap, and how we’ll be helping clients build the capability they need for the future.

Welcome to EMBS, James.
