Senior Substation Designer — Ireland Permanent | Co. Louth (with flexibility) | Competitive Salary + Benefits
The opportunity
This is a senior, high-impact position — effectively the No. 2 in the design function of one of Ireland's most respected electrical power engineering contractors. A business that has been delivering MV/LV switchgear, HV cable services, turnkey substation solutions, and renewable energy infrastructure across Ireland and the UK for over two decades.
You will lead complex substation design projects end-to-end, acting as the technical authority on all things MV/HV while supporting the broader engineering leadership team. If you're an experienced substation designer looking for genuine influence, a varied project portfolio, and a clear pathway to a leadership role — this is the one.
What you'll be doing
→ Leading the design of MV and HV substations from concept through to detailed design and construction issue → Producing and reviewing technical deliverables including single line diagrams, protection and control schematics, earthing designs, cable schedules, and equipment specifications → Acting as technical lead and mentor to junior and mid-level designers within the team → Interfacing directly with clients, contractors, and DNOs/TSOs including ESB Networks and EirGrid → Supporting tendering activity — reviewing scope, producing technical input, and advising on design risk → Ensuring all designs comply with relevant Irish and UK standards (ETCI, IEC, SONI/EirGrid Grid Code, ESB Networks standards) → Contributing to continuous improvement of design processes, tools, and quality standards
What we're looking for
→ Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering → Significant experience in substation design — MV/HV, ideally up to 110 kV → Strong working knowledge of protection and control, earthing/grounding design, and switchgear specifications → Familiarity with Irish grid standards and ESB Networks/EirGrid requirements (highly advantageous) → Confident using design tools such as AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar → Proven ability to manage multiple projects and lead technical discussions with clients → Chartered or working towards chartership (IEI, IET or equivalent) — desirable
