You will lead complex substation design projects end-to-end, acting as the technical authority on all things MV/HV while supporting the broader engineering leadership team. Our client is seeking an experienced substation designer to lead complex MV/HV design projects and act as technical authority within a growing design function, supporting the wider engineering leadership team.
As Senior Substation Designer, you will lead the design of MV and HV substations from concept through to detailed design and construction issue, producing and reviewing technical deliverables including single line diagrams, protection and control schematics, earthing designs, cable schedules, and equipment specifications. You will act as technical lead and mentor to junior and mid-level designers within the team, and interface directly with clients, contractors, and DNOs/TSOs including ESB Networks and EirGrid.
Alongside project delivery, you will support tendering activity — reviewing scope, producing technical input, and advising on design risk — while ensuring all designs comply with relevant Irish and UK standards (ETCI, IEC, SONI/EirGrid Grid Code, ESB Networks standards). You will also contribute to the continuous improvement of design processes, tools, and quality standards.
Successful applicants must be able to demonstrate a degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, together with significant experience in substation design across MV/HV, ideally up to 110 kV. You will bring strong working knowledge of protection and control, earthing/grounding design, and switchgear specifications, along with familiarity with Irish grid standards and ESB Networks/EirGrid requirements, which is highly advantageous. Confidence using design tools such as AutoCAD, ETAP or similar is expected, as is a proven ability to manage multiple projects and lead technical discussions with clients. Chartered status, or working towards chartership (IEI, IET or equivalent), is desirable.
