Electrical Design Engineer

Kildare (just off the N7) · Office-based · Permanent

There's a reason good HV substation designers rarely go looking. The work finds them, and they tend to stay put.

So here's the case for moving.

This is an in-house electrical design team that's growing because the work keeps landing, not because someone drew it on an org chart. You'd be designing live HV and MV substation and grid-connection projects across Ireland, the kind that actually get built, for a turnkey business that does the design, the build and the commissioning end to end.

What you wouldn't be is a number. This is a company of around 110 people where you get direct access to the people who make the decisions, real exposure across the business rather than one narrow slice of it, and genuine investment in where you want to go next. The team gets sent abroad for specialist training when the work calls for it (SF6 gas work in Germany being one recent example).

If you've ever felt like a small cog in a big machine, sitting in your lane inside a giant consultancy or utility, this is the opposite of that.

Two things to be straight about

This is an office-based role. There's a short, easy commute and parking on site, but it isn't a remote job, and a day a week from home only opens up after probation. If home working is your dealbreaker, this one isn't for you, and that's fine.

And ePlan is essential. Not a nice-to-have, not something you'll pick up once you're here. It's the single thing that separates the people we can put forward from the people we can't, so we're being upfront about it.

What you'd be doing

  • HV/MV electrical design on substation and grid-connection projects.
  • Single-line diagrams through to issued design, working in ePlan and AutoCAD.
  • Coordinating with the wider design, build and commissioning teams on live projects.
  • Real variety, because the project mix runs across ESB framework work and the renewables side.

What you'll need

Be honest with yourself against these. If you've got all four, we want to talk.

  1. ePlan design experience.
  2. HV/MV substation electrical design experience.
  3. AutoCAD.
  4. 3+ years in electrical design (more is welcome; the right person with serious experience won't be turned away over a number).

Knowledge of the Irish market moves you up the pile. We've been deliberately clear on the must-haves, so if you meet them you'll hear back quickly.

What's on offer

  • Pension matched up to 4%, from day one.
  • 23 days' annual leave, rising to 25 with service.
  • Virtual GP care: appointments, prescriptions and a 24/7 nurse line, tax-free.
  • Paid maternity, paternity and adoptive leave.
  • Death-in-service and income protection.
  • 10 paid sick days a year.
  • Free flu jab, quarterly wellness sessions and peer-nominated recognition awards.
  • Relocation and visa support handled in-house for the right candidate.

Where you'd be based

Kildare, right off the N7, about 50 minutes from Dublin city centre and driving against the traffic. Plenty of parking on site.

A note on who we'd like to hear from

This is a male-dominated industry and the company is actively working to change that. If you're a returning engineer, you've been put off power and utilities because it felt like a lads' club, or you've simply not seen yourself in a role like this before, we'd particularly like to hear from you. The flexibility and support here are real. This is a company that proves it rather than slogans about it.

How to respond

Send your CV, even if it isn't bang up to date, and we'll set up a short, no-pressure call to work out whether it's a fit before anything goes further.
