Overview

EMBS is working in partnership with a growing energy infrastructure business, delivering high-voltage substation projects across Ireland, that is currently in the market for a Senior Substation Manager to join their company on a permanent basis.

This market leader is a well-established entity within the HV substation and energy infrastructure sector and boasts a rich history of delivering safety-critical, highly complex projects for nationally significant network infrastructure. This is a senior leadership role within the substation function, with accountability for the strategic leadership, delivery and oversight of HV substation installation and pre-commissioning activities across multiple projects and teams.

Responsibilities

Off the back of continued success and a growing project portfolio, our client is seeking an experienced Senior Substation Manager to take strategic leadership of HV substation installation and pre-commissioning activities across Ireland, ensuring all work is delivered safely, compliantly, on time and to the highest quality standards.

Your responsibilities will include:

As a Senior Substation Manager, you will hold accountability for multiple projects and teams across the construction and pre-commissioning phases, providing oversight of HV substation projects from 38kV to 220kV, from installation through to pre-commissioning handover.

You will:

  • Lead, mentor and develop substation managers, engineers, site managers and supervisors, building high-performing multidisciplinary teams across construction and pre-commissioning activities
  • Set clear objectives, manage performance, support succession planning and promote a strong safety-first culture
  • Ensure projects are delivered safely, on programme and within budget, overseeing planning, resourcing and reporting, and supporting tendering and bid reviews
  • Act as a senior duty holder for HSEQ, ensuring compliance with Irish standards (ESB Networks, EirGrid, HSA), reviewing RAMS and pre-commissioning procedures and leading incident investigations
  • Provide technical leadership on installation and pre-commissioning activities, supporting technical reviews and value engineering, and overseeing QA, inspections, testing and handover
  • Act as a senior client contact, building relationships with stakeholders and representing the business at meetings and audits

Successful applicants must be able to demonstrate:

  • 10+ years' HV substation construction/installation experience
  • Proven leadership of large technical teams
  • A background in energy infrastructure
  • A strong understanding of HV substations, with experience in construction, testing and pre-commissioning
  • Knowledge of Irish standards and grid codes
  • A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Relevant HV certifications

Chartered Engineer status is desirable.
