Principal Protection & Control Engineer UK-Wide (Flexible) | 10+ Years' Experience | Senior Technical

The Opportunity

We're working with a leading global engineering consultancy to find a Principal Protection & Control Engineer to join their growing UK and Continental Europe team. You'll be working on some of the most technically demanding projects in the energy sector — high-voltage AIS and GIS substations, transmission assets, HVDC interconnectors, and energy storage systems.

This is a hands-on senior technical role with real project ownership, client exposure, and a clear path for those working towards or already holding chartership.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Leading FEED and detailed design workstreams for P&C systems across transmission and renewable energy projects
  • Developing and reviewing interface designs, protection schemes, and control philosophies
  • Reviewing protection settings, relay coordination, and scheme logic
  • Coordinating with back-office engineers, sub-contractors, and suppliers
  • Supporting tendering activities and contributing to technical bids
  • Undertaking site visits and non-intrusive surveys as required
  • Identifying and managing technical risks in line with CDM and safety standards
  • Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to team capability development
  • Maintaining client relationships and supporting business development

What We're Looking For

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (BEng or MEng); Chartered or actively working towards it (IET)
  • National Grid CDAE status
  • TP141 Authorisation desirable, or willingness to obtain
  • 10+ years in P&C FEED and detailed design at high voltage (132kV–400kV)
  • Strong knowledge of National Grid and SSE design processes and standards
  • Experience across DNOs, BESS, windfarms, and HVDC
  • Ability to manage competing priorities across multiple projects
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills

The Package & Culture

Our client offers a competitive package including private medical cover, enhanced parental leave, and support for professional development and memberships. Flexible and hybrid working is genuinely supported, with options to be based across multiple UK office locations.

A collaborative, people-first culture with strong mentoring at every level — this is a place where experienced engineers are valued and invested in.
