Lead Engineer – Substations & Grid Connections (110/220kV) Drogheda, Co. Louth, Ireland Permanent Competitive by level
embs. talent is working in partnership with an established electrical power engineering business — founded in 2002 and providing services to the industrial, commercial, electrical utilities and renewable energy sectors, specialising in MV and LV power. With field teams spanning Ireland, the UK, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany and over ten nationalities represented, the business has seen revenue close to double in the last year as it moves into larger utility substation, data centre, BESS and renewables projects.
As the business scales from circa €1m toward €20m+ contracts, they need a credible engineering lead who understands the ESB system intimately and can represent the company confidently in front of clients. Several of their strong engineers come from outside Ireland and are less focused on the customer-facing side; this role bridges that gap — an Ireland-based engineer with the technical depth to lead substation and grid-connection design, plus the presence to manage client relationships directly. You will own and deliver large projects and develop the engineers around you.
Genuine scope: Own and deliver large, high-value projects end to end as the business moves toward €20m+ contracts
Influence & ownership: A credible leadership role with real technical authority and direct client responsibility
Growth: Join a rapidly growing, multi-national engineering team with a strong project pipeline across utilities, data centres, BESS and renewables
Development: The opportunity to mentor and develop engineers around you
Our client is seeking a credible engineering lead to take ownership of substation and grid-connection design, represent the business directly with clients, and develop the engineers around them as the company scales into larger projects.
As Lead Engineer, you will lead utility and grid-connection projects up to 110/220kV, overseeing and signing off design drawings to a high standard. You will act as the credible, customer-facing point of contact — attending meetings, building relationships and representing the business technically — while owning and delivering €10–20m+ projects end to end, coordinating commissioning, procurement and delivery. Alongside project delivery, you will mentor and develop engineers in the team, including supporting less customer-facing colleagues.
Successful applicants must be able to demonstrate a strong grid-connection engineering background, having worked up to 110/220kV, with intimate knowledge of the ESB system or a directly comparable utility environment. You will bring a proven track record managing projects and signing off design drawings, ideally on large €10–20m+ projects with the bandwidth to own delivery, together with the client-facing credibility to lead client meetings and represent the business. A relevant electrical/power engineering qualification, or equivalent industry experience, is required, as is a genuine team-player mindset with the ability to mentor and develop others within a growing, multi-national team.
You will also bring excellent verbal and written communication and real confidence in front of clients and stakeholders at all levels, strong attention to detail and accuracy under strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment, a positive, self-starting attitude that takes ownership rather than waiting for direction, and the ability to build rapport and strong working relationships across all levels. Fluent English is required. The role is office-based and team-embedded at the client's head office in Drogheda, reporting to the Engineering Manager, with travel to client meetings and project sites across Ireland and Europe.
If you are interested in this opportunity to lead substation and grid-connection design within a fast-growing international engineering business and believe you meet the illustrated criteria, apply today or register your interest in confidence.
