Overview

Our client, a well-established organisation within the UK rail engineering sector, is currently seeking a Project Manager to support a major rolling stock transition programme based in the Midlands.

Operating at the forefront of the rail industry, this company is responsible for overseeing the delivery, compliance, and operational readiness of fleet assets and technical documentation during a significant period of network transition and public sector integration.

As project activity continues to expand, they are looking to appoint an experienced Rail Project Manager, to manage and coordinate engineering delivery activities across a complex programme environment.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will take ownership of a large-scale rolling stock engineering project, ensuring all operational, technical, and commercial objectives are achieved successfully.

Your duties will include:

  • Leading the planning and execution of engineering project activities from initiation through to completion
  • Managing programme timelines, budgets, and resource allocation to ensure delivery targets are met
  • Working closely with customers, suppliers, contractors, and internal departments to maintain effective communication and project alignment
  • Identifying project risks and implementing mitigation strategies to minimise programme disruption
  • Ensuring all activities comply with rail industry safety standards, quality requirements, and contractual obligations
  • Producing regular progress reports covering delivery performance, financial status, project risks, and corrective actions
  • Coordinating cross-functional teams, including engineering, procurement, finance, and operations departments
  • Monitoring project milestones and deliverables using recognised project management systems and methodologies

Candidate Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants should be able to demonstrate:

  • Degree-level qualification in Engineering or a related technical discipline
  • Significant project management experience within rolling stock, traction, or rail engineering environments
  • Previous exposure to train maintenance, heavy overhaul, fleet refurbishment, or engineering modification programmes would be advantageous
  • Strong organisational, leadership, and stakeholder management skills
  • Experience using project management software such as MS Project, Primavera P6, or equivalent
  • Formal project management accreditation such as PRINCE2, PMP, or APM is desirable
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure while managing multiple project priorities simultaneously
